Laurie Notaro is Our Idiot Girl Heroine

If you don't know who Laurie Notaro is, then you should find out.

I bought her first book several years ago when I was shopping in Target and saw it on the book rack. I found, "The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club" pretty hilarious. She's written several books since but none quite as good as the first. Or maybe I was in my 20s and found drunken stories of single women in their 20s a hoot.

Either way, Notaro started off as a journalist and tried to publish her book. It didn't work, so she self-published. Some time passed and an agent saw her work and thought, "I could probably sell this," and then called Notaro up and sold two books. ... And Laurie Notaro had her first book published by Villard (and second and third ...)

Hers is really a fairy tale, but I think we need to hear about them sometimes, don't you?

Hi, I just wanted to leave you a comment telling you how much I enjoy reading your blog. I'm an editorial assistant in NYC and I'm trying to get into freelancing so I love reading your blog. Would you mind ever doing an entry on how you got started in on freelancing? I've read up on it a lot and I have ideas, but I'm having trouble getting a start. I freelance for a small romance magazine in NYC that my friend is an editor at. I write one article per month on any topic I choose, so I'm trying to pick diverse topics so I have more clips. I know I should start small, but how did you find magazines/newspapers to pitch in the beginning?
